Bill to Create “Orlu State” in Nigeria has passed First Reading in House of Rep

On 22nd May 2024, The House of Representatives at the plenary, introduced and passed through first reading of the Bill seeking an additional state in the southeast region of Nigeria known as “Orlu state” which alters the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The proposed state (Orlu State) will be carved out from Imo, Abia and Anambra.

The proposed legislation has now passed the first reading and heads for second reading was sponsored by Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere , who is the lawmaker representing Ideato North South Federal Constituency of Imo State, and joined by other lawmakers.

Hon. Ugochinyere is appealing to his colleagues at the National Assembly to support him to ensure that the bill goes through the second reading.

The Proposed Orlu State

According to Vanguard, the bill seeks an amendment by inserting a new paragraph immediately after the Ondo State and before the Osun State paragraph, to read as follows: State – Orlu ,Capital City- Orlu.

The proposed Orlu state will form 28 Local Government Areas as include:

“Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, Oru East, Ideato North, Ideato South,
Njaba, Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu, Oguta, Ohaji Egbema, Onuimo,
Ihiala, Uga, Ihiala, Uli, Ozubulu, Akokwa, Arondizuogu,
Umuchu, Umunze, Umuaku, New Ideato North,
Nwabosi West, Nwabosi East, Owerre Nkworji,
Alaoma, Amaifeke, Owerrebiri Umuowa.”
